Chapter 33

OSCAR ON SADDLEBACK

The hideous roar filled the thick green forest, growing louder, as a tall dark creature raced into the open. Long stringy limbs hung down from the thick body as the humanoid beast with a dome shaped head loped toward the forest ranger.

Oscar stared in disbelief at the thing rushing toward him. He gulped trying to swallow the gory lump that crept up from the sudden pain in his gut. Suddenly, he broke from the spell that trapped him and dashed toward his truck. He jerked the door open and grabbed the modified assault rifle from the rack over the seat.

He whirled around and screamed. “Get back you, you, whatever you are or I’ll blast you!” His heart beat quickened but his confidence returned. “No ugly monster from some hole in the ground is going to scare me.”

The lumbering beast never hesitated. It rushed toward the stocky ranger and the barrel of the assault rifle, its huge yellow eyes glowing in the afternoon sunlight.

Oscar started to feel the pull of the bright golden orbs. He shook his head and screamed, “Stop!” as he strained to keep the wavering rifle pointed at the huge beast rushing at him. He blinked his eyes again and again, finally pulling the trigger, once, then twice.

The roar of the rifle cleared his mind.

The assault rifle slugs ripped into the creature who hesitated, brushed its paws over the bullet holes that seeped with a clear liquid until the wounds healed and it rushed at the man again.

Oscar shook his head. “No, you don’t,” he yelled. He fired the gun two more times as the beast covered the distance, then put the rifle on full automatic. The magazine of slugs tore into the upper chest, punching one hole after another.

The tall humanoid staggered back, then back again, as each projectile slammed into its thick torso. The creature’s huge feet cut grooves in the earth as the bullets drove it backwards. It looked down at the deep holes in its body as if in amazement. Liquid poured from the wounds soaking its stringy chest, but once again the beast hesitated and healed the wounds. Its eyes cast on the bewildered forest ranger.

Oscar shook his head and slammed another fully loaded clip into the automatic assault rifle. He swung it up and emptied the magazine into the beast rushing toward him.

Again the creature halted and staggered back with each round slamming into its torso, but as the flow of bullets ceased, it healed the wounds as before and fastened its golden orbs on the ranger before he could reload.

Oscar’s eyes slowly locked onto the glowing yellow spheres staring at him, and lowered, then dropped the rifle. His eyes widened until they hurt. I’m going to die, flashed through the ranger’s mind. He stood calmly as the stringy paws grabbed his shoulders. The deadly claws ripped across Oscar’s green uniform shirt, slicing rows of small cuts over his back as the strange monster threw the ranger over its shoulder.
